Bill Brownewell, 89, of Newville, PA a lifelong farmer and dedicated steward of the land passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026 at Forest Park Nursing Home, Carlisle, PA.
Bill was born on Oct 6, 1936 in Carlisle, PA to William and Bertha Brownewell. He grew up working the family farm and developed a deep love for the outdoors. Bill graduated from Carlisle High School and continued working the family farm in Carlisle, PA as well as establishing his own farm in Newville, PA. God blessed Bill as he nurtured the soil raising many successful crops and tending a beautiful herd of dairy cows. Bill had a strong work ethic and took great pride in farming. He was always willing to help other farmers in time of need. Bill was a member of the Cumberland County Farm Bureau and Waggoners Church.
Bill married Mae Schlusser on Sep 27, 1958 in Carlisle, PA. Together they raised two daughters while working together on the farm, creating a home filled with hard work, family meals, the beautiful rhythms of rural life and a strong bond with our Creator.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, his dedicated and loving wife Mae, and two brothers, Marlin and Wayne. Bill married Mary Elizabeth Garman on Nov 12, 2005 in Newville, PA.
Bill is survived by his second wife, Mary; two daughters, Debra Mae Verhagen (Doug) of Mechanicsburg, PA and Lori Ann Enck of Carlisle, PA; a brother, Floyd Brownewell (Jill) of Cape Coral, FL; 6 grandchildren, Jennifer Leigh Saylor (Shawn), Hollidaysburg, PA; Emily Jane Horner (Blaine), Denver, CO; Rachel Marie Zimmerman (TJ), Mechanicsburg, PA; Garrett William Enck (Jordyn), Mechanicsburg, PA; Tristan Arthur Enck, Camp Hill, PA; and Stephanie Enck, Mechanicsburg, PA; 6 great grandchildren (with three on the way!) and many other cherished family members.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 11:00 at Hoffman Funeral Home, 2020 Trindle Rd, Carlisle, PA . Visitation/viewing will precede the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Waggoners Church Cemetery, 1271 Longs Gap Rd, Carlisle, PA. The service will be livestreamed on the Hoffman Funeral Home website listed below.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill’s honor to the American Stroke Association – a division of the American Heart Association at Stroke.org.
