Thomas A. Rhen, age 89, of Carlisle, PA went to be with the Lord on July 22, 2025. He peacefully entered life eternal with family by his side. Tom was born in Harrisburg, Pa, son of the late Paul and Katherine (Megonnell) Rhen.
Tom learned leadership, service and commitment as a teenager earning his Eagle Scout Award. He graduated from the University of Tennessee and entered the United States Army in 1959. He was a Corps of Engineer Officer, serving 30 years and retired in 1989 in Carlisle, Pa. He served in Korea, Vietnam, Germany and the Panama Canal Zone culminating as the Division Commander/Engineer for the New England Corps of Engineers. In Tom’s “free” time, he was an avid gardener, golfer, fossil & mineral collector, wood carver, reader, choral singer, world traveler, Red Sox enthusiast and University of Tennessee football fanatic but most important to him was God, family and country.
Tom is survived by his wife Mary Koenig Rhen and his daughters Susan Rhen (Dawn) of Hopewell, Va and Julie Rhen (John) of Carlisle, Pa; 3 granddaughters; 3 great grandsons; and his siblings, Paul and Sarah Rhen. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his first wife Betty “Joan” Rhen; his son, Thomas A. Rhen II; his granddaughter Rachel L. MacLeod; his brother James Rhen and sister Mary Brunt.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle with Rev. Jennifer J. McKenna officiating. Burial will be at Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Second Presbyterian Church, Gentiva Hospice, and Tunnels to Towers.
