Richard L. Fortney Jr. (Rich), 62, of Carlisle, passed away unexpectedly at his home on January 18, 2026.
He was born in Carlisle, PA and was the son of the late Richard L. Fortney Sr. He was proceeded in death by his father and stepmother, Jeanette Fortney.
He was a 1981 graduate from Carlisle Senior High School. Rich was a former employee of the PA Turnpike and retired in 2015 after 28 years of employment.
Rich joined the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #1299 in 2007 and for many years he was an extremely active member serving on many committees, holding various roles including serving as their president from 2010-2012.
Bowling was also a favorite pastime; he was involved in different leagues. Rich developed an interest in woodworking and created figurines which were painted and antiqued. It made him happy to hand them out to friends, family, and many strangers.
Helping his neighbors whenever needed was a joy for Rich. He was especially excited when there were dogs involved that he could spoil with kind words, treats and belly rubs.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. Fortney, and two stepsons. He is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Pickering and her husband Mike of Mt. Holly Springs and Laura Baughman of Scranton; brother, Jason Fortney of Shermans Dale and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Rich to FOE Charity Foundation, 26 E. High Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
