Petra C. Smith

Petra C. Smith, 64, of Carlisle, passed away while surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at her home.

She was born December 24, 1958, in Schweinfurt, Germany to the late Georg Gunter and Rita Cacilie (Appelmann) Engert.

Petra loved her family and enjoyed every moment she spent with them. When she wasn’t caring for her family, Petra did volunteer work at several animal shelters and thrift stores. Her love for animals was always apparent. Over the years Petra had many pets including cats, dogs, ferrets, pigs, geese, turtles, parrots, and several others. She liked gardening, making crafts, sewing, traveling with her husband, and spending time with her grandchildren. Petra looked forward to playing BINGO weekly and was always on the lookout for a good yardsale.

Petra is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Stephen T. Smith of Newville; three children, Michelle L. (husband Todd) Orenstein of Wallkill, NY, Robert J. (wife Jenifer) Smith of Carlisle, and Michael S. (wife Rachel) Smith of Carlisle; seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Alex, Tyler, Landon, Kayce, Harrison, and Bridget; one sister, Christa (husband Joe) Hines of North Pole, AK; two brothers, Gunther (wife Iris) Engert of Germany and Dieter (wife Rosie) Engert of Germany.

A private memorial service celebrating Petra’s life will be held at the convenience of the family at Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Petra to the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, 2397 Quentin Rd, Lebanon, PA 17042 or to the no kill animal shelter of your choice.
