Melvin O. Murtorff, Jr., 95, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026.
Born on January 25, 1931, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Melvin lived a life defined by faith, hard work, generosity, and an unwavering devotion to his family and friends.
As the owner of Murtorff Construction Co., Melvin spent 45 years as a respected developer in the Carlisle area. He was a member and Past President of the Carlisle Chapter of Home Builders Association and served on the Harrisburg Builders Association Board of Directors. Melvin helped shape the community through his vision, craftsmanship, and commitment to excellence. He took great pride in his work and in the lasting impact he made throughout the region.
Melvin was first married to the love of his life, Marian Murtorff, for 62 years until her passing in 2012. Together they built a beautiful life filled with family, enduring friendships, and countless adventures. Melvin was a member of the Carlisle Elks Lodge and he and Marian especially enjoyed spending evenings dancing at the Elks Lodge, where they could often be found enjoying music and each other's company. In his younger years, Melvin was an accomplished guitar player who performed with a local band, reflecting a lifelong love of music.
Melvin and Marian enjoyed traveling, exploring destinations throughout the United States and abroad. During their retirement years, they especially enjoyed spending time between their homes in Pennsylvania and Florida, creating treasured memories and lifelong friendships along the way. Following Marian's passing, Melvin was blessed to find love again with his wife, Phyllis Durnin Murtorff. They shared 12 happy years of marriage until her passing in 2025. Melvin and Phyllis regularly volunteered their time to Community CARES, an organization that provides life-changing support, vital resources, and crucial services to those experiencing homelessness. A man of deep faith, Melvin was a member of Red Mount Church in East Berlin and later became a member of Carlisle First Church of God in Carlisle. His faith quietly guided the way he lived, worked, and cared for others. Melvin was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his children, Linda Murtorff Trostle and her husband, Dennis; Michael Murtorff and his wife, Patricia; and Debra Murtorff Andros. He was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Murtorff, in 2016. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immeasurable pride and joy. Melvin will be remembered not only for the buildings he constructed but for the life he built, a life grounded in faith, family, friendship, generosity, and love.
