Mary J. Harter

May 27, 1930 — February 6, 2023

Mary J. Harter, 92, of Carlisle, passed peacefully into the arms of her Loving Savior on Monday, February 6, 2023.

Mary J. (Perrine) Harter was born May 27,1930, in Jackson, MI to the late Richard D. and Mary Genevieve (True) Perrine.

Growing up on the family farm with 3 brothers, Mary learned to love God and his creation, especially horses. Her love for God and hard work during difficult times Mary into a true Proverbs 31 woman of God; loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mary met Bob during her days at Houghton College, Houghton, New York. While Bob continued work training in Ohio & served with the United States Marine Corps Reserves in Korea, she continued her education. Upon his return they were married in Jackson, Michigan on June 21, 1952, and moved to Ohio.

When Bob was offered a regular USMC commission they decided together that serving in the military was God’s will for their future. During her husband's military career, she moved her family many times. Each time she moved, Mary sought out and served in women’s and children’s ministries on post and through the local churches they attended. She hosted & taught Good News Clubs through Child Evangelism Fellowship and spent a considerable amount of time volunteering with the American Red Cross at the United States Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Army War College Carlisle Barracks. Mary was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution In New York & Cumberland County Chapters. She was a member of Faith Chapel Carlisle and regularly attended the US Army War College Memorial Chapel.

Mary’s love of cooking and gifts of hospitality made the Harter home an oasis of good food, Godly conversation and always the love of Jesus. Her life exemplified Jesus’ words in the gospel of Mark…

“…go ye into all the old and preach the gospel to all creation.” Mark 16:15
