Marlin L. McLaughlin, 98, of Mechanicsburg, died Thursday, September 10, 2026 at Bethany Village.
Born in Mt. Holly Springs, he was the son of the late Robert and Josephine (Diven) McLaughlin and husband of the late Gayle (Rupp) McLaughlin, who passed away in 2013.
Marlin proudly served in WW II near the end of the conflict and was proud of his service with the Seabees, serving in Japan, Hawaii and Guam.
He was a very successful and well-established painting contractor for 53 years in Cumberland County. At one time he had over 50 employees and painted commercial and residential facilities all over Cumberland County and the surrounding area. He had established a well-respected reputation among competitors and locals, which he was very proud of his accomplishments as was his family.
Marlin loved going to the seashore with his family and friends and having a good time relaxing at the beach. He and his wife traveled on bus trips which they loved later in life and enjoyed meeting very interesting people. No matter where they went, he always met people he knew. He had a great zest for life and was very fortunate from very humble beginnings.
He was an avid hunter and loved the sport, especially coon hunting with his many trained dogs over the years. He also enjoyed fishing for trout in local streams and spending good times with family and friends at several cabins located in Reedsville, PA (Mifflin County), Blain and Laurel Lake.
Marlin was also an avid Penn State football fan, attending several bowl games at Beaver Stadium. He was a lifelong Dodgers fan since he was a young boy and also enjoyed the Phillies later in life.
He was also a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, Carlisle.
Survivors include his daughter: Dianne (John) Shuey, Mechanicsburg; his grandchildren: Janna (Damien) Hahn, Shiremanstown, Bryan (Erin) Shuey, Mechanicsburg; his great grandchildren: Bryce Shuey, Dillsburg and Dylan Shuey, Mechancisburg as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Marlin was preceded in death by his son: Darryl McLaughlin and his siblings: Harold “Peck” McLaughlin, Paul “Pete” McLaughlin, Walter “Sam” McLaughlin, George “Dutch” McLaughlin, Robert “Jake” McLaughlin, Harry “Pat” McLaughlin, Raymond “Bink” McLaughlin, Ethel “ET” Bender, Gladys “Gag” Myers and Helen Barrett.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral service 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026 at Hoffman Funeral & Cremation, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, where the family will greet guests after 10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle.
