Joseph (Joe) Francis Balascio Jr, 84, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, surrounded by the loving embrace of his family.
Born on August 14, 1941, Joe was raised in Kingston, Pennsylvania, by the late Joseph F. and Anna Balascio. He attended Catholic school and was deeply rooted in his faith from an early age. After graduating from West Side Central Catholic High School in Kingston, he completed his undergraduate studies at King's College. He went on to further his education at Penn State University, where he earned both a master's degree and a PhD in Solid State Science. Joe spent the majority of his career at Motorola, retiring in 1998. There, he worked as a research scientist specializing in quartz crystal growth and was a true pioneer in his field.
While at Penn State, Joe met the love of his life, Irma Wagner Balascio, who was completing her master's degree. They married on September 10, 1966, and together raised three children: John Balascio (Gina), Johanna Balascio-Russell (Faron), and Catherine Balascio (Steve). Joe was an incredibly supportive and devoted father, faithfully attending his children's sporting events and activities and taking them to every home Penn State football game. He was a loving and proud "Pop Pop" to his five grandchildren: Alexis Russell (Ellan), Alexandra Sonfield, Andrew Balascio, Caroline Sonfield, and Alivia Russell and a cherished "Pop Pop" to his great-grandson, Elijah Pasamonte.
Joe lived his life guided by his quick wit, infectious laughter, and a constant readiness to help others. He was a devout Catholic and a devoted member of St. Patrick's Church since the family moved to Carlisle in 1977. The family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace after a long battle with dementia, one he fought with great strength and determination. They are also comforted knowing Joe has been reunited with those who passed before him, including his parents; his special aunt, Tete; his Aunt Mary; his infant brother, David; his granddaughter, Nina Sage; and many cherished friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers who supported Joe and the family along the way, especially the compassionate staff at BAYADA Hospice and Sarah Todd Nursing Home.
All are welcome to attend a Catholic Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, April 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Shrine Church, 152 E Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA 17013. Burial will take place at St. Patrick Cemetery and will be private and held at the discretion of the family.
