John M. Rinker, age 72, of Carlisle, PA, passed away on October 31, 2026. He was born in Lewistown, PA, on February 27, 1954, to the late John E. Rinker and Mazie Booher.
John was a one-of-a-kind man who left an unforgettable mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He had a personality that could fill a room, a heart that loved deeply, and a way of making sure he was never forgotten. It can safely be said that John became something of a legend at Hershey Hospital—so much so that his name and stories seemed to travel ahead of him. His smile would make the nurses day. Those who knew him there will certainly have their own “John story” to tell, and there will never be another quite like him.
John loved watching football and proudly cheered for his beloved Washington Redskins, now known as the Washington Commanders. He rarely missed one of his daughter’s softball games and could always be counted on to be there, cheering from the sidelines.
But above all else, John cherished his only granddaughter, Reese. She was his number one priority and the light of his life. John made it a point to attend her activities, sporting events, and anything else she was involved in. He was incredibly proud of her, and the bond they shared was truly special. Reese will forever carry with her the memories of her Pappy John and the unconditional love he had for her.
John was a member of the Yellow Breeches Anglers & Conservation Association and enjoyed spending time at the stream or out on his boat fishing. He also enjoyed going to the drive-in movies with his lifelong friend, Diane Schindler. These simple moments brought him great happiness and created memories that will be treasured.
John worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a painter and was a graduate of Chambersburg High School 1972.
John is survived by his daughter, Crystal L. Miley (Schindler) and her husband, Corey; his beloved granddaughter, Reese Miley; twin sister, Rhonda Hock and her husband, Richard; stepmother, Miriam Rinker; brother, Troy Rinker and his wife, Dawn; brother, Brett Rinker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John M. Rinker was preceded in death by his father, John E. Rinker, his mother, Mazie Booher and life long friend, Diane Schindler.
John may no longer be sitting in the stands at Reese’s games, watching his football, casting a line into the stream, or making his presence known at Hershey Hospital, but the memories he created will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. His stories will be told, his jokes will be remembered, and his larger-than-life personality will continue to bring smiles and laughter for years to come.
And as John would probably have wanted it said: the legend may have left the building, but he certainly did not leave anyone’s memory.
Memorial services will be held at a later time.
