John F. Mira, MD, 72, of Carlisle, died Tuesday, December 26, 2017 after an extended illness.
Dr. Mira was born in Emporium, PA, to Dominic and Josephine Mira. He graduated from Cameron County High School in Emporium, PA. Dr. Mira graduated from Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska. He completed an internship at Parkland Hospital in Dallas Texas, and then did his psychiatric residency at the University of Rochester.
Dr. Mira served as a Naval Officer staff psychiatrist at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia. After honorable discharge, he served as medical directors at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and later at Helen Stevens Community Mental Health Center in Carlisle. Dr. Mira opened a private psychiatric practice in Camp Hill, PA which he operated for over 37 years. He also opened and directed an inpatient psychiatric unit at Carlisle Hospital. Later, he served as medical director of the Harrisburg Institute of Psychiatry and became chairman of the department of psychiatry at Harrisburg Hospital. He has served as psychiatric consultant and medical director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Most recently, Dr. Mira, worked at the Harrisburg Youth Advocate Program. He also worked at clinics in York and Lancaster throughout the last several years.
Dr. Mira held certificates from the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. His areas of special interest were in medical education, family and group therapy, clinical administration of psychiatric inpatient care, management of bipolar disorder, children and adolescent psychiatry, and in developing alternative care models.
Dr. Mira’s personal interests included automobiles, Penn State football, Creighton University basketball, collecting unique watches and small electronic “gadgets of convenience.”
Dr. Mira is survived by: his fiancée, Ilene Gentzler and her family of York, PA; his brother, Dr. Allan Mira, of Carlisle with his wife Jan; his brother, Robert Mira, of Prescott, Arizona, with his wife Mary Ann; his sister, Donna Lang, of Allentown, with her companion Jess; his aunt, Eleanor Mira of Jamestown, NY; his cousin, Gail Majors of Tempe, Arizona, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Burial will be held with full military honors at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. in early spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Youth Advocate Program of Harrisburg, the Elk’s Club of York, PA, or a mental health charity of your choice.
