Obituary

Johnathan "John" Paul Detrick, beloved husband, cherished son and brother, steadfast friend, and passionate seeker of knowledge, departed this world peacefully on August 6, 2026, in Hershey, Pennsylvania, at the age of 54. Born on May 17, 1972, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, John's journey was one marked by warmth, curiosity, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

From his earliest years, John radiated a voracious appetite for learning, a trait that would shape his path throughout life. He found particular joy in American history, ultimately undertaking the remarkable feat of reading a biography of each American President in chronological order—a testament to his intellectual curiosity and devotion to understanding the world’s tapestry. His fascination for reading extended to his love of Marvel comics, about which he co-hosted a successful podcast, and to the magical worlds woven by Disney, which he explored both on the page and in person during cherished travels with his husband, Brad. Theirs was a union rooted in enduring partnership, blossoming not only in marriage since 2013 but in a loving togetherness that spanned a quarter of a century.

John’s professional accomplishments reflect his sense of civic purpose. As a Legislative Assistant for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives—Democratic Caucus, he served with diligence and dedication, applying his acuity and empathy to the public good, and leaving an indelible mark on those whose lives he touched through his work.

Yet, it was John’s exceptional gift for friendship—his lifelong practice of collecting friends and staying connected to them—that truly defined him. To know John was to be welcomed into a wide and inclusive circle, woven together by his generous spirit. He leaves this world surrounded by a community of friends who supported and loved him deeply, each carrying with them memories of his laughter, kindness, and encouragement.

John is survived by his devoted husband, Bradley Cleland; by his loving mother, Susan Detrick; dear sister, Jennifer (Tony) Boise. His family through marriage held a special place in his heart: mother-in-law Cheryl Cleland; brother-in-law Eric (Rose) Cleland; brother-in-law Nathan (Nancy) Cleland; nieces Ava and Carleigh Cleland, and nephew Trenton Cleland. Each of them bears witness to the love and joy that John brought into their lives.

He joins in eternal rest his late father, Paul Detrick and father-in-law Leon Cleland, they having preceded him in passing.

John’s memory will endure in the quiet moments shared over books, in the adventurous spirit he brought to travel, in every laugh among friends, and in the lasting bonds of family and community. His legacy is one of connection, curiosity, and abiding love—a light that continues to illuminate the hearts of all who knew him.

Those who mourn his loss and celebrate his remarkable life are invited to honor Johnathan's memory at Walden Hall in Mechanicsburg on September 19th, 2026, 1:00 pm. May his journey onward be met with the same warmth and joy he brought to this world.
