Joanne Nyberg, age 88, of Carlisle entered the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at UPMC West Shore.
She was born on August 19, 1937, in Rockwood, PA to the late Harold and Virginia (Miller) Coughenour. After graduating from Southern High School in Baltimore, MD, she worked as a secretary before marrying Don and moving to Pennsylvania.
Joanne was devoted to caring for those around her, and continually used her gifts to serve her family, neighbors, and church. She spent countless hours blessing others with her exceptional culinary skills though cooking, baking, and preserving food. She was also proficient at needlework, sewing, and flower arranging which was evident throughout her home. She loved to host, and often welcomed others in for conversation and a meal. Joanne also loved creation, and enjoyed gardening and viewing the wildlife and changing seasons from her kitchen window which overlooked her farm’s pond.
She and Don operated a Christmas Tree Farm together for over 25 years for which she crafted and decorated hundreds of Christmas wreaths. In their retirement years, she and Don frequently traveled and returned with many stories.
Joanne became a Christian after moving to Pennsylvania, and she lived out her faith through teaching Sunday School, hosting a Good News Club for children in her home for many years through Child Evangelism Fellowship, and weekly church attendance at Faith Chapel. After becoming a widow, Joanne spent several hours each morning reading her Bible and listening to Bible teachers. She loved the Lord deeply and in conversation frequently sought to point those around her to Christ.
Joanne is survived by two children, Scott Nyberg of Camp Hill and Kristen (husband Carl) Gerber of Carlisle; four grandchildren, Kyle (wife Alexia) Gerber, Justin Gerber, Jonathan (wife Annika) Gerber, and Christopher Gerber; two great grandsons, Henry and Oliver Gerber; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Nyberg and one brother, Clyde Coughenour.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Faith Chapel, 1453 Holly Pike, Carlisle, PA 17013 with Pastor Michael Mayer officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will follow at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joanne to Faith Chapel; Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607; or to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Cumberland County, 150 Fairview Drive, Carlisle, PA 17013.
