Ina Mae (Feather) Canfield, of Mechanicsburg, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother died Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home, Carlisle.
Born January 17, 1937 in Morgantown, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Chester R. and Effie M. (Fickey) Feather. She was a graduate of Keyser High School in Keyser, WV and married James David “Dave” Canfield at the Church of the Assumption in Keyser on October 15, 1955. They began their marriage living in Washington D.C., the first of many homes during the following quarter century of military life. Together, they weathered good times and bad, including five years of separation due to military requirements. She passed away just three weeks prior to their 70th wedding anniversary.
As a military spouse, Ina was the epitome of strength and independence as she raised five children while moving around the world, finally settling in her twenty-first home in Mechanicsburg. At every stop, she set an example of confidence and leadership within the military, local and international communities, including a favorite stint as a Bridge instructor in Germany. She was loved and admired by all with whom she came in contact. Many in the Carlisle community were touched by Ina’s selfless ten-year service as the Coordinator for the Carlisle Meals on Wheels program.
As Ina gradually fell victim to Alzheimer’s Disease the family rallied around her to keep her life as happy as possible. She kept her strength and upbeat attitude to the end. She will always be held in our hearts as the most giving and loving woman who always put her family first. In them her love will forever be remembered and appreciated.
She is survived by her husband, Colonel (RET) Dave Canfield, four children: Dennis (Patsy) Canfield, of Easley, SC, Catherine Canfield Barrows (Brent), of Carlisle, Jeffrey Canfield (Mike), of Mechanicsburg and Dana (Ann) Canfield, of Mechanicsville, IA. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents and a daughter, Janet Canfield Wallace.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to all at ARTIS Senior Living Memory Care Center, Lemoyne and Sarah A. Todd Home, Carlisle, for their loving care throughout Ina’s time there.
