Elizabeth A. Rankin

March 14, 1913 — July 2, 2012

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Rankin died on July 2, 2012 at the age of 99 in Carlisle’s Thornwald Home where she had been a resident for six years.
She was the last remaining of the seven children of Frank and Victoria (Mayerchak) Jakubec of Charleroi PA, and the widow of John S. “Jack” Rankin, a widower with an 8 year old son, whom she married in 1949. They lived in Belle Vernon PA until moving to Strawberry Court in Carlisle in 1990. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her step-son, Dr. Larry S. Rankin and his wife Jean of Carlisle, grandchildren Wendy and husband Brian Plummer of Amherst MA, Leslie Rankin of Columbia MO, Kimberly Rankin of Brattleboro VT, step-grandchildren Nell Booth and partner Jennifer Goldberg of Philadelphia PA, John Booth currently working at the US Antarctic Station at the South Pole, Paul Booth of Hilo HI, and great-grandchildren Luke, Lindsey and Anna Plummer and Elijah Booth, and by several nieces and nephews.
She was devoted to her family and credited her long life to regular exercise. At age 90 when driving to the “Phase III” exercise program at Alexander Spring Rehab became problematic, she requested as her birthday present an exercise treadmill that she faithfully used in her condo, and thereafter she rode a stationary cycle at Thornwald.
Chaplin Anna Thompson will conduct a Memorial service at 2 PM on July 24, 2012 at Thornwald Home, Carlisle. Interment of ashes will occur at the convenience of the family in Brush Creek Cemetery in Irwin PA. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Louther St., Carlisle, PA 17103, or Thornwald Home, 442 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle, PA 17013, or a charity of choice.
