Doris S. Warren, age 97 of Carlisle, PA passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2026 exactly as she had wanted; peacefully at her home, surrounded by family and friends.
Born June 21, 1929 in Port Colden, NJ, Doris was the eldest child of the late Harvey Sr. and Nina (Gardner) Shearer. After graduating in 1947 from Newville High School, she continued her education by attending and receiving her diploma in 1948 from Frederick's School of Beauty Culture in Harrisburg, PA. Independent and ahead of her time, Doris worked a short time as a hairdresser in downtown Carlisle until she purchased her own beauty shop on Hanover Street. She met and married Richard P. Warren of Boiling Springs in August of 1954. After the birth of their daughter in 1956, the young couple built a home together where Richard lovingly created a beauty shop space for Doris on the side of the house so she could continue doing what she loved while being a caring mother and wife. In addition to doing hair for 45 years, Doris and Richard spent many years active with the Whirl A Ways square dance group, traveling together, and serving in their church, Grace United Methodist.
Doris was a kind and faithful person who spent a long and fulfilled life caring for family and friends, members of her church, and her neighbors. She enjoyed sewing, attending church, and gardening. In her later years, Doris would often question why God had chosen her to stay with us for so long. The answer is clear; she lived a full and independent 97 years, truly as a vessel of God, whether through her kind actions or later in life filling a void as grandmother figure for so many who cared for her. Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through him.”
She was preceded in death by her brothers, H. Donald Shearer Jr., William L. Shearer, Richard L. Shearer, Kenneth L. Shearer, sister Gloria M. Williams, and devoted husband Richard P. Warren of 49 years. Surviving are her sisters Twila Winters of Shippensburg, Linda (husband William) Bowles of Newville, many loving nieces and nephews, her daughter Melinda S. Lattimer of Reidsville, NC, granddaughter Heather M. (husband Justin) Erickson of New Bern, NC, and two great-grandsons Dane Erickson and Marcus Erickson.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Hoffman Funeral Home, 2020 Trindle Rd, Carlisle, PA beginning with a private viewing for family at 11:30am, followed by a 12:00pm service for all who wish to share in a remembrance and tribute to Doris.
