David Matthews

David James Matthews, 77, of Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Penn State Health Holy Spirit Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late Donald and Loretta (Lutz) Matthews and husband of 56 years to Cheryl (Shultz) Matthews.

David served in the US Army and worked at the Army War College, retiring as Maintenance Supervisor.

He enjoyed being outdoors and hunting and was an avid gunsmith. He loved sports and especially enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies and the Green Bay Packers. David also loved all kinds of racing, from dirt track to NASCAR.

What gave David the most joy was his family. He thoroughly enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities, sometimes arriving two hours early to make sure the field was in good condition.

In addition to his wife, David is survived by his children: daughter Kelly Finkey, her husband, Ryan, of Mt. Holly Springs, his son Shawn Matthews, of Carlisle, his daughter Tanya Burns, her husband, Andy, of Carlisle; his grandchildren: Logann Davis, Hunter Finkey, Brendan Burns, Kye Burns and Kade Burns; his great grandson, Weston as well as his sister, Debra Ives, her husband, Lynn and his brother, Tom Matthews, his wife, Julie, all of Wisconsin.

David was preceded in death by his brother: Jon Matthews.

Services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
