Darlene M. Black

Darlene M. (McLaughlin) Black, of Carlisle, PA, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at home with her loving family by her side.  She was 76.

Darlene was born in Carlisle on October 12, 1947, a daughter of the late Walter L. and Annabelle (Vanasdalan) McLaughlin.  She was a graduate of Carlisle Area High School.  

She was married to her husband Larry B. Black of Carlisle for 58 years and made Carlisle their lifelong home. Darlene was the office manager for the Cumberland County Public Defenders office for over 15 years and worked in other administrative positions for local law offices.  

Darlene was a wonderful mother and loved to vacation each summer with her husband and family to the Jersey Shore or the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  She was an avid gardener and looked forward to tending to her flowers and particularly her gardenias annually.  She loved to see the hummingbirds and butterflies visit her flowers and garden. Golf became a passion of Darlene’s, and she enjoyed playing with her family and was excited every Tuesday in the summer for her women’s golf league.  After rounds she loved to talk and share the highlights of her play.

In addition to being a terrific wife and mother, she loved being “Bibby” to her six grandchildren.   She attended their activities and sporting events where her pride in each of them showed through her cheering and enthusiasm for their passions.  She cherished the time with her grandchildren and was always looking forward to the children’s next visit to Bibby’s house. 

She is survived by her husband Larry B. Black of Carlisle, and her three children, son Bryan B. (and his wife Karina) Black of Delmar, NY, son Michael D. (and his wife Tara) Black of Carlisle, and daughter Maryann E. (and her husband Chad) Reed of Felton, DE.  She also leaves six grandchildren, Emma and Maggie Black, Madelyn and Matthew Reed, and Owen and Leah Black.

Additionally, she is survived by her twin sister and two brothers, Arlene (husband Peter) Barber of Hershey, PA, Leonard (wife Vicki) McLaughlin of New Cumberland, PA and Dennis (wife Deborah) McLaughlin of Huntsdale, PA.

Family and friends will honor and remember Darlene’s life by gathering for viewing hours at the Hoffman Funeral and Cremation LTD., 2020 W Trindle Road, Carlisle, on Thursday, May 9^th from 6 to 8 p.m. On Friday, May 10^th, additional view time will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service at Hoffman Funeral and Cremation.  After the service a memorial reception will be hosted by the family at Mayapple Golf Course on Friday from 6-9 p.m.
