Daniel John Alloway, 71, passed away on Wednesday, June 10,2026 at his home in Carlisle, PA.
Dan was born August 11, 1954 in Burlington, VT, the son of Ralph and Dorothy (Alloway). After several moves throughout Dan’s youth, the family settled in Harrisburg, PA in 1966. Dan attended Susquehanna Township Middle School and Bishop McDevitt High School, graduating in 1972.
He joined the Marines after high school and served four years on the flight line, stationed in Yuma, AZ and Beaufort, SC, among other places. Following his service, he worked at the New Cumberland Army Depot, and then he started his own construction business, River City Construction. River City was awarded a contract to develop City Island in Harrisburg in the 1980’s. After successfully completing many other projects, Dan joined Giant Food Stores (Ahold) as a Construction Project Manager and relocated to Carlisle, PA in the 1990’s. He retired from Giant and started Alloway Consulting before enjoying full retirement in 2021.
Dan was passionate about carpentry, rebuilding much of his home relying on his vision over detailed work plans. The results were remarkable.
Dan’s other passion was golf. Dan took the game very seriously and expected his playing partners to do the same. Few players could meet his expectation to always follow proper golf etiquette. But Dan was truly happy when playing a round of golf with his family and friends. A friendly wager never hurt.
Dan loved spending his winters in Scottsdale, AZ with his life partner of 38 years, Susanne Binder. After their first visit there when his daughters were in their early teens, Susanne and Dan fell in love with the desert. It was truly Dan’s happy place, and he relished taking visitors on tours of his favorite sights.
Dan and Susie also loved exploring other countries and cultures including many Caribbean Islands, Mexico, golf in Ireland. The highlight of all their travels was Vatican City, where he had a close encounter with Pope Benedict, XVI.
But, Dan’s greatest passion was his “girls” and grandchildren and watching them grow. In addition to Susanne, he is survived by two daughters, Lauren (Justin) Edelson of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Stacey (G.R.) Smith of Statesville, NC, and his four grandchildren, Braden Edelson, Taylor Smith, Bailey Edelson, and Carson Smith.
Additional survivors include a brother Tim (Jan) Alloway of Harrisburg and a sister Katie Messina of Ocala, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and a host of good friends.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Chris Alloway, of Wheeling, WV.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at 10:00 am with a Mass to follow at 11:00 am at the Shrine Church of St. Patrick, 152 E. Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA. A Celebration of Life will follow, with details provided at the service.
