Barbara Ann (Palmer) Griggs, 90, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 17, 2026. She was born in Neptune City, Monmouth County, New Jersey, on November 8, 1935, to Walter D. Palmer and Bertha Brown Palmer. Her youth was spent in the Manasquan, NJ area, where she enjoyed boating and digging for soft shell crabs.
She spent the first 23 years of her life in New Jersey where she met and married Robert Griggs (deceased). Barbara worked at Fort Dix for several years before they relocated to south-central Pennsylvania. They started Cumberland Country Abstract Company (CCAC) and worked together off and on from 1962 to 1985, when she and daughter Debra took the reins. Barbara retired at the age of 70. In 2009, she started tutoring Granddaughter Courtney in history and making greeting cards.
In 1969, the family moved to the Gettysburg area where they opened a garden center and wholesale plant nursery. Barbara stepped away from CCAC to run the nursery business. Around this time, Barbara also became very involved in Girl Scouts and later became a Junior, Cadettes, and Senior Scout leader. She was also involved with the A.F.S. foreign student exchange program and a supporter of the Gettysburg High School cross country and track teams. If there was a need to be filled, she was always there.
She is survived by her four children: Sharon (Heather, daughter) of Laurel, MD; Kathy (John, son) of Carlisle, PA; Gregory (and his wife, Mary Alice and four children, Morgan, Ian, Dylan, Rhiannan and four great-grandchildren) of Oceanside, CA; Debra (daughters, Courtney and Angela) of Carlisle, PA and two honorary granddaughters from Northern Ireland, Danielle and Lisa.
She was predeceased by her parents, and by her brother, Walter ‘Bud’ Palmer, and sisters, Rhoda Matthews, Dorothy Springsteen, and very special sister-in-law, Eileen Griggs.
Her visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday February 18, 2026, and her Celebration of Life service will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Hoffman Funeral & Cremation, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle.
