William Gary (Bill) Galbraith

March 3, 1934 — January 14, 2015

William Gary (Bill) Galbraith, 80, of Carlisle, PA, died January 14, 2015, of heart disease in Harrisburg Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 3, 1934 in Brookville, PA to Russell L. Galbraith and Lois E. Crawford, he graduated from Brookville High School in 1952 and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He joined the US Army in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania graduating in 1959 with a B.S. in Art Education and was granted a Master's in Art Education from Penn State.
Bill married Sharon Evans McLaughlin, on April 1, 1967. In 1970 they became the proud parents of unexpected twins Jack Gregory and Bink (William) Russell, both of whom have inherited his artistic talent, reading ability, and penchant for punning.
Bill, or "Teach" as he was oft called, taught art and photography and was president of PSEA at Middletown High School before taking up an art education position at Cumberland Valley High School for over 30 years retiring in 2001. He still receives thanks from former students in the area.
A longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church, he sang in the choir, served terms as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. He volunteered at Project Share, CROP WALK and Carlisle Meals-On-Wheels.
Bill was a committed teacher both in and out of the classroom, a lover of stories, education, and humor. Bill made many lifetime friends, flying frequently at Skyport Airport in Mechanicsburg. He loved aviation and piloted small planes with his wife Sharon for many hours, their cat Nudge being an early passenger.
Bill was an avid watercolorist and painter, exhibited locally, received art awards, was a member of the IUP Alumni Association, the BPOE #578 Elks Club–where he served as chairman of the Student Aid Committee, the Scottish Society of Central PA, Pennsylvania Association of Retired Educators, and Cumberland County Association of Retired Educators. He sang in the men's barbershop chorus, the Carlindians, for years. He especially enjoyed meeting his coffee group at McDonald's and weekly breakfasts with teachers from CVHS.
Bill is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Carlisle, and his sons, Jack and Bink. He was predeceased by his sister Gail Mannion. His family including many nieces, nephews and in-laws will miss him very much.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Jan 31 at 11:00am, reception to follow at Second Presbyterian Church, 568 Garland Dr., Carlisle. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Second Presbyterian Church or to Project Share, 5 North Orange St, Carlisle, PA 17013.
