Vera Mae Thomas, 84, of Carlisle died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at her home.
Born February 10, 1930 in Blain, Perry County, she was a daughter of the late Gard M. and Mae Vera Snyder Smith.
She was a graduate of Blain High School and also attended Elizabethtown College. She played basketball throughout high school and college. She was co-owner of Thomas Sewing Center and also worked with the family business, marketing nutritional products. She loved to sew and was known for the fabrics she chose for the store. She was an active member of Bible Baptist Church, Shiremanstown where she had taught Sunday school to preschoolers. She was a member of the Carlisle Garden Club where she served as a past-president. Last summer her home was the site of an open house for the Garden Club. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to travel which she did extensively all over the world. Most of all, Vera was known for always helping people who needed a hand.
Surviving are her husband of sixty-five years, Jack N. Thomas of Carlisle; five children: Jacqui Grier (and husband, David) of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Dennis Thomas (and wife, Shirley) of Carlisle, Barbara Musser (and husband, Rob) of New Providence, Melissa Thomas-Brumme' (and husband, Marty) of Maytown, and Jonathan Thomas (and wife, MaryBeth) of North Reading, MA; one brother, Robert E. Smith of Newport; one sister, Ida Book of Blain; twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lila Wallace and two brothers, Richard and Frank Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle with Pastor Ron Berrus officiating. A viewing will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Sunday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2014 at Blain Cemetery, 274 West out of Blain.
