Velma “Joy” Castle Callaghan, 90, of Carlisle, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family.
Born April 3, 1921 in Attica, KS, she was a daughter of the late William Arthur and Anna Martha Elizabeth Crain Castle.
Joy was a member of the Civic Club, Carlisle, the Farm Women’s Club, Newville and the Mayflower Society. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the Monroe Elementary School Library and the Salvation Army (a bell ringer at Christmas). During WWII, she built B24 airplanes for Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa, OK. She successfully fulfilled her ambition of being a wife and mother and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Jack Callaghan. Together, they lovingly raised four children: Mary Ann Callaghan (and husband, Gregory Snyder) of Harrisburg, Kathleen Zarnowski (and husband, Richard) of Carlisle, William Harry Callaghan (and wife, Mary Beth) of Longmont, CO and Patricia Callaghan Miller (and husband, Andrew) of Chambersburg. Surviving also are seven grandchildren: Joseph M. Walker, Christopher Walker, Jeanine Walker, Tatiana Zarnowski, Genevieve Zarnowski, Andrew Callaghan and Anna Callaghan, favorite niece, Donna V. Soles of Yorktown, VA and four great-grandchildren. Also her beloved dog, Hugo. She was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Lines.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday May 9, 2011 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle with Rev. Linda Dominik officiating. Entombment will be in Westminster Mausoleum, Carlisle. A viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home.
