Ruth Murtoff

Ruth Katz Murtoff, 91, died Oct. 24, 2013 at the Church of God Home, Carlisle, PA. She was born Dec. 7, 1921 in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late William L. Katz, DDS and Salina Weir Katz, and the widow of Albert John Murtoff.

Ruth grew up in Allentown and enjoyed many childhood summers at their family cabin at Brown's Mills, NJ. Ruth attended Gettysburg College where she met her husband Albert (Moe) Murtoff. Ruth was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, assisted with Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, helped with Stephen Ministry and the nursery and was on church council. Ruth spent most of her working years at The Bosler Library and belonged to The Friends of The Bosler Library. She enjoyed delivering books to the Cumberland County Prison. She was instrumental in the planning of the V. I. P. program (a summer program for disadvantaged children of Carlisle). After retirement, Ruth and Moe enjoyed 10 years of traveling to Venice, FL for the winter months. While in FL, Moe enjoyed attending Spring Training Camp for the Boston Red Sox.

Ruth is survived by four children, Ruth Murtoff (husband, Donald) Osborne of Carlisle, William Albert (wife, Joanne) Murtoff of Hudson, MA, Anne Hawbaker of Mt. Holly Springs, and Robert Gulden (wife, Mary Ann) Murtoff of Boiling Springs; one sister, Marie Brobst of Ann Arbor, MI; six grandchildren, Neil Hawbaker, Sarah Hawbaker, Steven Murtoff, Alicia Murtoff, Mary Elizabeth Murtoff, and Emily Murtoff; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Isabella Murtoff. Ruth is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Perry County.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 E. High St., Carlisle, PA with Pastor Lisa Leber officiating. There will be a viewing at the church from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Westminster Cemetery, 1159 Newville Rd., Carlisle, PA following the service.

Funeral services are being arranged by Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., 219 N. Hanover St, Carlisle.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 E. High St., Carlisle, PA 17013 and The Bosler Memorial Library, 158 W. High St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
