Robert Harvey Sheriff, 88, of Carlisle, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Green Ridge Village.
He was born January 18, 1935, in Carlisle to the late John Henry Sr. and Emma (Minich) Sheriff.
Robert was a gun enthusiast who felt thankful for all of the relationships he formed at shows and shoots over the years. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Gun Collectors Association, the NRA, the Antique Arms Association in Harrisburg, and the St. Thomas Sportsmen’s Association. Robert loved hunting and camping in Potter County. He enjoyed throwing horseshoes with family and friends. Robert was a member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Horseshoe Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1299. Robert co-owned and operated Star Construction for many years with his brother. Even during his last days, he enjoyed going to the Shippensburg Auction to see if he could find any deals.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Lavonda Louise (States) Sheriff of Carlisle; three children, Cathy Mae Sheriff (Carlisle), Gerald Leon (wife Connie) Sheriff of Gardners, and Gloria Louise Sheriff of Carlisle; one brother, John Henry Sheriff Jr. of Carlisle; four grandchildren, Justin (wife Theresa) Sheriff of Carlisle, Amanda (husband Michael) Sheriff-Bollinger of Hellam, Jason Sheriff (significant other Nichole) of Carlisle, and Jeremy Norcross of Carlisle; and six great-grandchildren, Kaylie, Aubrie, Brody, Ella, Easton, and Emmett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret T. Watson and his half-brother, William Russell.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013 with Rev. Richard L. Reese officiating. Burial will follow at North Middleton Church of God Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday both at the funeral home.
