Richard S. Bullock (Col. Ret.)

July 1, 1928 — February 5, 2016

Colonel (Ret.) Richard Straw Bullock (Dick), age 87, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2016 surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 1, 1928 in Cambridge Springs, PA and was the son of the late Arza R. and Blanche Straw Bullock.
Dick graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA) in 1952 before beginning a career of military service. On February 28, 1953 Dick married Marjorie Campbell (Marge) of Edinboro. Soon after, he was on a ship headed for Germany where he joined the Army of Occupation in Germany for a thirty-nine month tour. Marge joined him in Hanau for a long European honeymoon. Upon his return to the United States he joined the USMA faculty. Dick served two tours in Vietnam, in 1960 as an advisor to Civil Guard leaders in the Song Mao field detachment and in 1968 in command of the 6th Battalion, 27th Artillery. He attended the Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth graduating in 1964 and attended graduate school at the University of Michigan, earning a Master of Science in Engineering degree in Aerospace Engineering in the spring of 1966. Dick was pleased with his military career and proudest of his troop duty. He began the final phase of his career in the summer of 1970 when he reported to the Carlisle Barracks as a student at the Army War College and where he later joined the faculty. In 1978, he was appointed to the Bernard M. Baruch Chair of Management and later served as the Director of Academic Policy. With service of nearly 10 years, Dick on the day of his retirement had served on the War College faculty longer than any other commissioned officer in the history of the institution. After retirement, Dick was employed by a defense contractor, Mandex, Inc. Dick and Marge chose Carlisle as their place of retirement. Dick took great satisfaction in maintaining their unique home, working tirelessly in his yard and vegetable garden, and collecting military memorabilia. A wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Dick took great joy in spending time with and teaching his family. For 36 years, the family has gathered at Dick and Marge's treasured home for holidays.
In addition to his beloved wife, Marge, of almost sixty three years, Dick is survived by two children, Richard S. Bullock, Jr. and his wife Jobil of Virginia Beach and Jennifer Dieter and her husband Patrick of Mt. Holly Springs; four grandchildren, Richard S. Bullock, III and his wife Laura of Ebensburg, Marjorie Dieter of Washington, DC, Charles Bullock of Ridgway, PA and Austin Dieter of Washington, DC; two great-grandchildren, Cloey Mulligan and Dominic Bullock of Ebensburg. He was preceded in death by his only brother, LTC Frank E. Bullock.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be private at Westminster Cemetery.
