Richard Oliver Alspaugh, Sr., 85, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
Born February 26, 1925 in Carlisle, he was a son of the late Lee C., Sr. and Edna M. Thumma Alspaugh.
He was a graduate of Carlisle High School, Class of 1943. He left High School in his senior year to join the US Navy and returned to graduate in uniform. He served as a 3rd Class Machinist Mate in the US Navy serving on the USS Wichita and the USS Bremerton during WWII. He apprenticed as a mason under Michael Delancy. In 1952 he formed Brownawell-Alspaugh Masonry Contractors with his partner Richard Brownawell. Upon his retirement as a mason he worked at the Carlisle School District as a custodian. Then, he worked in the facilities management department at Dickinson College at Sparr Library for twelve years and retired in 1994. Richard was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Mt. Holly Springs where he served as usher with his son, Richard who was head usher.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Pauline W. Alspaugh, one daughter, Debra K. Cobb-Wharam (and husband, Dewey “Jack”) of Carlisle, two granddaughters, Brandy M. McCabe (and husband, Keith) of Carlisle and Courtney A. Collare (and husband, Christopher) of Carlisle, three great-grandchildren, Celine E. Collare, Chelsea M. McCabe and Shannon C. McCabe all of Carlisle. Also surviving are his nephew, Robert Alspaugh who was raise with Richard as a brother and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard O. Alspaugh, Jr. Also three brothers, Lee C. Alspaugh, William N. Alspaugh and Donald H. Alspaugh.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 4, 2011 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 420 Park Drive, Carlisle with Rev. Richard Robinson, Jr. and Rev. Scott Hocker officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. A viewing will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3, 2011 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle and also from 9:30 a.m. until the of the service on Friday at the church.
