Rexford J. Ganster, 93 of Carlisle, died Sunday July 3, 2011 in the Forest Park Health Center, Carlisle.
Born February 14, 1918 in Meadville, PA, the son of the late Harry T. and Naomi Cutshall Ganster and the widower of Lillian Welsh.
Mr. Ganster was employed by the former American Viscose/FMC Company in Meadville for 32 years and was a tank supervisor at PPG in Mt. Holly Springs for 14 years where he was involved in the initial startup of the first tank. Rexford was a US Army veteran serving in WWII where he was a 5th Division tank mechanic. He served in the European Theater, landed at Utah Beach and went the entire way to the Rhine River. He was a long time member and usher at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Carlisle. Member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 1299 and White Circle Club, both of Carlisle. Rexford was an avid deer and bear hunter.
Surviving are two daughters, Lorene M. Ganster, Carlisle and Barbara A. Grainger, Tyler, TX, a brother, Samuel Ganster and his wife Rita, Purcell, OK, a granddaughter, Anne Ganster, Sewickley and a sister-in-law, Leatrice Ganster. He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Russell, Blaine and Frank Ganster, three sisters, Geraldine Tessmer, Marion Logan and Norma Seaman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Thursday July 7, 2011 in the St. Patrick Catholic Shrine Church, 140 E. Pomfret Street, Carlisle with Rev. William C. Forrey as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Patrick Catholic Church Cemetery, Carlisle. There will be a viewing from 10:00 am Thursday until the time of the mass in the church.
Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
