Raphael S. Hays II, age 83, of Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the Church of God Home, Carlisle.
He was born on May 11, 1934 to the late Edward Gardner and Jeannette Burgyes Hays. He was a graduate of Carlisle High School and Dickinson College and received his Masters Degree from Rutgers University.
Raphael is survived by his wife Janice Corfield Hays and his son Edward Gardner Hays II of Carlisle, PA. Additional survivors are: his sister Ellinor Hays Dyke (husband Gene Dyke), nephews James Torrence (wife Penny Breitenbach), Gardner Torrence (wife Julie Pucher), Richard Frey and niece Jeannette Metzger Frey, sister-in-law Judith Corfield Starkey and brother-in-law John Weller Corfield and their families. Raphael was preceded in death by his sister Mabel Hays Torrence.
Raphael was the former President and Chairman of the Board of Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company, Carlisle, PA. He was the former Chairman of the Metzger Trust which partially funded the women’s program at Dickinson College. He taught at the Gill St. Bernard’s School; teaching various histories, economics, and race, class and gender courses. Upon his retirement from the school in 1995, he was awarded the Gill St. Bernard’s Chair which is the highest honor given to a faculty member. He was also a past recipient of the Milton E. Flower Historian of the Year award.
Raphael was an avid tennis player, who followed his father in coaching the Dickinson College Men’s Tennis team from 1959–1969. His teams compiled an overall record of 111-22, three undefeated seasons and a record of 47 wins in a row.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 am, Friday February 9 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle PA. The service will be officiated by Reverend Dr. Jeffrey W. Gibelius, Pastor.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 N. Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA.
