Nancy (Clark) Berzinec, 80, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011, in Holy Spirit Hospital, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Carlisle, PA, to the late George and Addie Clark, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. William Berzinec, brother John “Jack” Clark and sister Cathy Hefflefinger.
Nancy was a graduate of Carlisle High School, Class of 1948 and Carlisle Commercial College. Prior to marrying, she was Secretary to the Commandant of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle from 1951-1958, which is also where she met her future husband. Nancy was a very proud and dedicated “Army wife” until her husband was killed in action in Vietnam in 1968 while displaying exceptional gallantry, for which he received the Silver Star.
Later, Nancy served as the Director of the Kitchen Shoppe Cooking School. She also served as a cooking instructor at the Kitchen Shoppe, and many other locations throughout Cumberland County over the years. Nancy authored several cookbooks of her own and studied with Julia Child, James Beard and several other famous chefs.
Nancy returned to the grounds of the Army War College when she served as the Catering Manager for the Carlisle Barracks Officers Club from 1987 until her retirement in 1995. She was very proud of her service to the Officers and visiting dignitaries at the War College.
Nancy’s childhood home was across the street from the Dickinson Presbyterian Church, where she was a life-time member. She was also a member of the Cumberland County and Keystone Chapters of the Military Officers Association of America, the Cumberland County Historical Society, the Officers’ Wives Club of Mechanicsburg, and many other organizations and associations.
Nancy is survived by a son, Greg Berzinec (and wife Jane) of Mechanicsburg; a daughter, Lisa Wolfe (and husband Michael) of Mechanicsburg; three grandsons, Mark, Blaine and Mitch Wolfe; a brother, Don Clark of Temecula, California; several nieces and nephews; and countless other loving friends and family members.
Services for Nancy will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Dickinson Presbyterian Church, 12 Church Road, Carlisle with Rev. Jeanette Mater and Rev. James Reitz co officiating. Burial will be in Dickinson Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Carlisle. Viewing hours will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011, at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home, 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110 and Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 North Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
