Mary Ann Burkholder

Mary Ann Burkholder, 80, of Carlisle, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, in her home.

Born Dec. 22, 1930, in Temple, Texas, the daughter of the late Arthur Buckner and Ann Keeble Wall.

She was a graduate of Brownwood High School, Texas, and attended Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas. She met her husband at the First International Presbyterian Convention at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. She was a member of Carlisle First Church of God and Sea Island Presbyterian Church, S.C.. Mary Ann tutored first grade in Beaufort and Ridgeland, S.C..

Her activities in Carlisle include: Second Presbyterian Church Choir, Interpretive Movement Choir and Stephen Ministry; Carlisle Country Club; Fortnightly Club of Carlisle; Carlisle Hospital Auxiliary and Day Lillies. Mary Ann started Book Clubs and Bible Studies in Carlisle and Callawassie, S.C.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, L. William Burkholder Jr.; a daughter, Kathryn B. Kerr (and husband, Andrew) of Newville; a son, L. W. "Buck" Burkholder III (and wife, Cathie) of Carlisle; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, in the Carlisle First Church of God, 705 Glendale Street with Rev. D. Alan Mathna officiating.
