Kurt E. Suter, of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully at Temple University Hospital on Saturday, January 27, 2018 in Philadelphia, PA at the age of 76.
Kurt is survived by his wife, Pam; his daughters, Molly (Jason) Szewczak of Whitehall, PA, Katie Suter of Claymont, DE, Lucy (Rick) Zander of Carlisle, PA; his stepson, Cullen Lupo of Baltimore, MD; brother, Richard (Ginny) Suter of Carlisle, PA; sister, Barbara Suter of New York City, NY; his grandchildren, Luke and Ben Szewczak of Whitehall, PA and Jack and Liza Zander of Carlisle, PA; and 4 nephews, Eric, Craig, Jason and Guy Suter; and several great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Kurt and Grace Suter of Carlisle, PA.
Kurt was born on June 1, 1941 in Savannah, GA. The family moved to Carlisle when Kurt was in elementary school. Kurt was a graduate of Carlisle High School and graduated from Dickinson College in 1965 with a degree in Economics. Shortly after graduating college, Kurt began his entrepreneurial career in real estate development by purchasing his first rental house. He spent over 40 years as owner and operator of Carlisle Mobile Homes. He had a long business partnership with Bill Hooke that spanned 55+ years. The Hooke & Suter partnership was instrumental in the development of numerous commercial and residential properties, including apartments, office buildings, and hotels in the Carlisle area.
Kurt was an active and influential member of the local Carlisle community by serving on various boards. He was the President of Board of Directors of The Arc of Cumberland & Perry Counties (CPARC) and was proud of his role in orchestrating the land donation for the current CPARC administrative offices. Kurt served on the board of directors of the United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County and was a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society for 20 years directing his charitable giving to many local non-profit organizations. Kurt also served on the boards of Farmers Trust, Keystone Financial Services and F&M Trust. Kurt was also a member of Dickinson College’s John Dickinson Society.
Kurt was the recipient of numerous accolades and awards throughout his life, which included a Certificate of National Merit from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, a Chairman’s Round Table member from the Carlisle Family YMCA, Luther S. Beers Distinguished Service Award from CPARC, and most recently the Carlisle Area Chamber of Commerce’s Business Achievement Award with business partner Bill Hooke.
When Kurt wasn’t at work, he loved to travel the world with his wife, enjoyed annual Walt Disney World trips with his children and grandchildren, golfing with the Bailey Club, monthly lunches with the Friday Club, reading and spending time at his home in Florida.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, February 3, 2018 Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA with Pastor Josh Crain officiating. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Viewing will be from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, February 2, 2018 at the funeral home.
