Katharine L. Eaton

Katharine Landis Eaton, "Kay", died peacefully at her home in Lemoyne, PA, on January 3, 2014 at age 82, after a courageous battle with dementia. She was born on July 8, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA, to Walter and Marie (Kinzinger) Landis, both of whom predeceased Kay. She was proud of graduating from the Philadelphia Girls' High School in 1949.
She is survived by her life partner of 36 years, Dorothy "Dot" Everhart, Lemoyne, PA. She is also survived by her four adult children: Jeffrey (Loretta) Eaton, Wellsboro, PA, Janice (Mike) Hess, Sabinsville, PA; Christopher (John) Eaton, Maplewood, NJ and Corinne Gronemus, Corning, NY. Kay was a loving grandmother to nine: Marc Eaton, Breckenridge, CO; Patrick Eaton, Wellsboro, PA; Janelle Hess (Brandon) Neal, Charlotte, NC; Julie Hess (Sean) Ulrich, Raleigh, NC; Mike Hess, Sabinsville, PA; Christopher and Spiros Sarantakis, Maplewood, NJ.; David Gronemus, Waterloo, NY; Jeremy Gronemus, Corning, NY. Kay was great-grandmother to Connor, Owen and Leo Neal, Charlotte, NC. Kay is also survived by sisters, Carolyn (Henry) Collyer, Corrales, NM and Sherry (Domenic) Bentivegna, Springfield, PA.; two nieces and four grandnieces. Kay was predeceased by her step-mother, Signe Landis.
Kay was employed at Kuhl's Florist (Mansfield, PA); Corning Glass Works (Corning, NY); and as a clerk for the PA Liquor Control Board (Wellsboro, PA), retiring in 1991. Kay was an avid gardener, loved to read and was a fan of opera, theater and classical music, professional bull riding and traveling. Earlier in her life, she was active in the Tioga County Chapter of N.O.W., the First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro, the Wellsboro Food Pantry, and TARSA, the AIDS/HIV Service Organization.
There will be a celebration of Kay's life at a later date at the convenience of her family. Kay's ashes will be placed in the Memorial Garden at the Unitarian Universalists of the Cumberland Valley in Boiling Springs, PA. For those wishing to make a donation in Kay's memory, please consider the Mozambique Bursary Project at UUCV, 2 Forge Road, Boiling Springs, PA 17007, which provides high school education for girls.
