John Woodward Hertzler, Jr.

John Woodward Hertzler, Jr., age 71, the Man born before the Wind, passed under the Blue Moon on May 21, 2016.
He was born March 24, 1945 in Carlisle to the late J.W. (Woody) and Ardelle M. Hertzler.
Johnny was a 1963 graduate of Carlisle High School and of Penn State University in 1968. After 6 years in the US Army Reserves, he was honorably discharged. Johnny was part owner of JP Bixler and Sons Hardware Store and also worked for Chimney Sweep Systems for over 20 years. He was a vivacious, loving spirit who grasped life with both hands. He was deeply committed to his family, to his Baby Love, to Mother Nature, and to his mountain home of 41 years in the "Land that Time Forgot" where he loved watching birds, wildlife and the trees and flowers growing from his "office". When not on the mountain, he cherished his time at ECGC and, of course, the Maryland and Delaware shores where he fished and body surfed with the best of them. He loved his "Mother Ocean"! Everywhere John went, he carried his passion for the Blue and White Nittany Lions, never failing to watch or listen to Penn State football. The essence of Johnny Hertzler: his love for life and his affinity for living it the way he wanted.
John is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 41 years, Katharine Anne (Snootz) Hertzler; his son, Sean Woodward Hertzler and his fiancée Abigail George; grandsons, Woody and Henry; his daughter, Kristin (and husband Tim) Zeigler and grandson, Silas; his brother, Sam B. (and wife Eleanor) Hertzler; his mother-in-law, Isabel Knauss; many nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous wonderful friends, who, throughout his life, felt as close as family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA. There will be a visitation on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
