James Dunbar Flower, Jr.
James (Jim) Dunbar Flower, Jr., 60, of Carlisle, died Saturday, October 12, 2013, at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, in Hershey, PA from complications related to Burkett's/Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma.
He was born September 10, 1953 to James Dunbar Flower and Faith (Myers) Flower.
Jim graduated from Carlisle High School, received his B.A. from Haverford College and his J. D. degree from the Dickinson School of Law. He was admitted to the bar in 1978 and practiced law in Cumberland County for 35 years, at the time of his death as a partner in the law firm of Flower Law, LLC in Carlisle. He also served as the Cumberland County Juvenile Court Dependency Master, where he was responsible to conduct formal hearings for alleged abused and neglected children, and was the solicitor for the Carlisle Area School District.
His leadership positions in the Carlisle community were extensive. He was a member, Past-President and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Carlisle Rotary Club, the second Vice President of the Cumberland County Bar Association, and served on the Boards of Directors for the Downtown Carlisle Association, the Carlisle Area United Way (Past-President), Cantate Carlisle, and was the solicitor for the Bison Foundation. He was past Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Carlisle Hospital and a Past-President for the Cumberland County Historical Society. As a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Carlisle, he served as Assistant Treasurer and sang in the church choir. He also served as Treasurer for Historic Carlisle, Inc. and enjoyed playing the role of John Armstrong during Revolutionary War re-enactments.
Jim was twice elected to the Carlisle Borough Government Studies Commission, and was a former member and Chairman of the Carlisle Borough Historic and Architectural Review Board. Jim served on many additional community boards in the past including the Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community, the Helen Stevens Mental Health Center, the Carlisle YMCA, Sara Todd Memorial Home and the Carlisle Health Care Alternatives. He also provided leadership to the formation of the St. John's Community Church in Laporte, PA in 1998.
Among friends and family, Jim will perhaps be best remembered as a doting husband and father, a voracious reader, a wonderful listener, a gracious host, and a truly fabulous cook.
Surviving are his wife of twenty-eight years, Dawn Laraine (Hicks) Flower, of Carlisle; one daughter, Lenore Ramsey Flower, of University Park, MD; and one son, James Dunbar (Jamie) Flower, III, of Carlisle. He also survived by two brothers, Thomas E. Flower, of Carlisle, and John M. Flower, of Arlington, VA; and two sisters, Elizabeth F. Flower, of Philadelphia, and Juliana D. Flower-Lord, of Swarthmore, PA.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 26, 2013, at St. John's Episcopal Church, on the Square in Carlisle, with The Rev. Canon Mark A. Scheneman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to: St. John's Episcopal Church, Box 612, Carlisle, PA 17013.
