J Fred Quigley

December 6, 1946 — March 21, 2017

J Fred Quigley, age 70, of Carlisle, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born December 6, 1946 in Carlisle to the late Doris (Brown) Quigley Pratt.
Fred was a 1965 graduate of Carlisle High School and a graduate of Youngstown State University with both a Bachelors and Masters in music education. He retired from the Army after serving three years with the First Army band, two years with the Continental Army band, and 15 years with the Army Field Band (of which he served with The Jazz Ambassadors from July 1978 through November 1981). While traveling with the prestigious Army Field Band, Fred performed in all fifty states and Korea, Japan, India, Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. Fred performed before all sitting presidents from President Carter to President George H.W. Bush. Highlights of these historical performances include accompanying President Reagan to the beaches of Normandy for the 40th anniversary of D-Day in 1984 and the 1989 Inauguration of George H.W. Bush. After his army retirement Fred taught high school, then was the Concert Band and Jazz Band director at Dickinson College for six years. He was also on the staff of the Sound of America Honor Band and chorus European summer concert tour for 18 years. Fred was currently the instructor of saxophone at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, as well as having a private clarinet and saxophone studio.
He is survived by: his sister, Sue Ann (and husband Gordon) Halteman of Carlisle; nephews, Justin Halteman of Washington, DC and Joseph (and wife Catherine) Halteman of Carlisle; and a niece, Kimberly (and husband Eduardo) Villarreal of Cleveland, OH.
A Celebration of Fred's Life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Mira A. Hewlett officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family at Westminster Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 897, Hershey, PA 17033.
