Elizabeth A. Lockhart

Elizabeth A. Lockhart, 87, died Monday, January 23, 2017 at her home. She was born on April 4, 1929 in Houlton, Maine to the late Coburn H. and Carolyn McFarland Ayer.
Her early years were spent first in Maine and then in New York where she graduated from Scarsdale High School. Betty, as she was known to most of her family and friends, graduated from Swarthmore College in 1950. She earned an M.A. from Yale University in 1954. In 1959 she married Philip North Lockhart who predeceased her in 2011. Betty began her career as a teacher of Latin and English at the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York and the Katharine Branson School in Ross, California. She also taught Latin at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and at Dickinson College. In Carlisle Betty was a member of Second Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder with a focus on Christian Education especially for adults. She particularly enjoyed her years as a Bethel Bible Study teacher and prepared many lessons for Sunday School classes and her women's circle. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and the Mary Dickinson Club. Betty volunteered at Bosler Memorial Library, Carlisle Hospital, and Claremont Nursing & Rehab Center.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Bruce M. Lockhart, resident of the Republic of Singapore and a daughter, Elizabeth Wood, and her husband Jeffrey, of Gardners (PA).
A Ceremony of Committal was held at the Gilgal Presbyterian Church cemetery in Indiana County (PA) on Friday, January 27, 2017.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle PA, on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
