Alwyn H. King, 98 of Carlisle, died on Friday, July 27, 2018 at his residence.
He was born May 13, 1920 in Calgary Canada to the late Charles G. and Lena (Stewart) King and was married to LTC. Grace M. King who passed away in 1988, and Bonnie J. (Thain) King of Carlisle.
Alwyn graduated from North Tonawanda High School, NY (Class of 1936) where he was a member of the swim team. He attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1948 and graduated with a BA in Engineering and was on the wrestling team. Next, he attended Columbia University in NY and graduated in 1958 with a MS degree. Alwyn went on to study in Germany at the Stuttgartand Gottinhen Universities where he earned his Docotrate Science degree in 1960, and then lastly Babson College in Wellesley, MA where he received his MBA degree in 1973.
Alwyn was a gold prospector in the Canadian Bush of Quebec from 1936-1941. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1941-1980 and was stationed at Kaneohe Naval Air Station in Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was stationed in Paris, France during the V-E Day Celebration, stationed in Yokohama, Japan, where he worked on logistical supplies for the Korean War. He retired from the Army Reserves in 1980 at the rank of Colonel. Alwyn was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and was inducted into the Engineer Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame in 2016. He was employed by Arthur D. Little in Cambridge, MA 1960-1966, and Brunswick Corporation in Needham, MA as a Materials Research Scientist from 1966-1972. From 1973-1985 he worked as a Research Group Leader at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA, and also as an Economist and Strategic Research Analyst for the War College, retiring in 1985.
He is survived by: two daughters, Judy Bludsworth and Carolyn King; one sister, Joan Caldwell; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA.
