Chief Warrant Officer Richard A. Holmes

October 2, 1942 — December 5, 2019

Chief Warrant Officer (W-4) Richard A. Holmes U.S. Navy, Retired, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2019 in his home in Carlisle, PA at the age of 77.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 2, 1942 to Edward and Lillian (Dalzell) Holmes. He graduated from Delehanty High School in 1960 and Upper Iowa University with a Bachelor of Arts.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1963 and went on to serve as a submariner on the USS Carp (SS-338) as an electrician. His submarine was in port in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada when he met Janet R. Cameron. Richard and Janet married on December 4, 1965. Richard served in the Navy for 34 years, retiring as a CWO4 in the Naval Reserves. He went on to serve with the Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, until 2014, being inducted into the Holland Club.

Richard worked in the telecommunications industry with Bell Telephone and AT&T in New York and New Jersey. One of the highlights early in his career was overseeing the New Year’s Eve lighting and ball drop in Times Square. He then went on to work for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections as a counselor and manager, retiring in 2002. Richard raised his family in the Poconos.

Richard volunteered with the U.S. Navy Sea Cadets and was part of the Telephone Pioneers. He could most often be found puttering in his workshop and doing house projects. We will remember him as the man who could fix or build anything, was willing to help anyone in need, had a great sense of humor, and had an iron clad work ethic. He always worked to advance and achieve, and never gave up.

Richard is survived by his wife Janet, of 54 years; son, Terrence; daughters, Heather, Kristy, Kelly, and her husband Nicholas Palmertree.

A graveside service will be held on December 9, 2019 at 10:30am. Richard will be laid to rest at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pennsylvania.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in memory of Richard to either the U.S. Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation at USSVCF, PO Box 3870, Silverdale, WA 98383 www.ussvi.org (Charitable Fund) or Pleasant Hills Christian Church at 5122 Earl Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17112.
