Carl W. “Bill” Jones III, 77, of Gardners, died unexpectedly Friday, February 9, 2018 at his residence.
He was born February 23, 1940 in Gadsden, AL, a son of the late Carl W. Jr. and Sarah Louise Palmer Jones.
Bill proudly served his country during the Vietnam Era as a sailor in the US Navy. His service included work as an Advanced Undersea Maintenance Weaponsman and a Nuclear Depth Bomb Technician. He retired as a Master Chief Torpedoman in 1986 after 26 years of service. After his military service, Bill worked for the Naval Ships Parts Control Center, Mechanicsburg for 13 years. He later served as the Chairman Supervisor for Cooke Township before retiring in December 2017 after 17 years of service. He also served as the President and Vice President of the Western Cumberland Council of Government.
Bill enjoyed hiking and working on the Appalachian Trail with his wife, Carol. He worked on the Appalachian Trail Museum, and was a member of the Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park and the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. He was also a skilled craftsman who enjoyed woodworking and making improvements around the house that Bill and Carol shared near Pine Grove Furnace.
Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years Carol Ann (Kessler) Jones of Gardners; one son, Carl W. (wife Laura) Jones IV of Carlisle; one brother, Randall Palmer (wife Faye) Jones of Pensacola, FL; one sister, Sarah Paula Jones (husband Donald) Faulkner of Walnut Hill, FL; two granddaughters, Zoey Marie and Alaina Belle Jones, numerous nieces and nephews and two faithful dogs, Apache and Daisy.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 23, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA with Rev. Jan E. Custer officiating. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing or visitation.
