Captain Newton C. Robbins

September 24, 1927 — January 21, 2019

Captain Newton C. Robbins (Ret-PSP), age 91, of Carlisle, PA, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2019. He was the son of the late William E. and Miriam F. (Clemens) Robbins.

He graduated from Milton High School in 1945. His brother, Carl M. Robbins, proceeded him in death in 1975.

He was married to Patricia A. Deckerhoff of Claysburg for 62 years. He is survived by his wife and their two children: Traci M. Blanchard and her husband Raymond Blanchard, of Newville; Matthew C. Robbins and his wife Rev. Aileen Robbins, of Rochester, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Robert C. Blanchard, Rebekkah Lohrman, and Megan Bourque; and two great-grandchildren.

Captain Robbins served in the U.S. Navy during WW-II and received an honorable discharge. He was a licensed pilot for over 66 years and had started flying when he was 16 years old. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol for 28 years. He was a charter member and past president of the Carlisle Flying Club. He graduated from Roosevelt Aviation School and was a licensed aircraft and powerplant mechanic. The FAA awarded him the prestigious Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” Award.

He received the Congressional Gold Metal Award and the Nations Highest Civilian Award for service in the Civil Air Patrol during WW-II. Captain Robbins became a Pennsylvania State Policeman serving from 1949 through 1981.

He was a member of St. Matthias Evangelical Lutheran Church. Upon retirement, he became involved in community service. He founded and was the first president of the Carlisle Area Crime Stoppers program. He also helped start the Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers and was their secretary for 11 years. He was a member of the Carlisle Exchange Club and was involved in a number of community activities and projects. Captain Robbins received the Carlisle Area’s Finest Award for Community Organizational Leader and the Exchangite of the Year award (1985).

Captain Robbins was a member of Milton Masonic Lodge 256, and the Williamsport Consistory for over 60 years and a past member of Jaffa Shrine. He was an avid sportsman and loved fishing and hunting. He was a PADI certified open-water SCUBA diver.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Aileen Robbins officiating. A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Captain Robbins’ name to the St. Matthias Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3500 Spring Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
