Bertha Peffer Boyd Thompson, 96 of Carlisle, died Friday December 24, 2010 at Chapel Pointe at Carlisle.
Born March 7, 1914 in Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur D. and Lizzie Baughman Peffer and the widow of James W. Boyd and Oscar E. Thompson.
Bertha was a graduate of Boiling Springs High School and Shippensburg University.  She earned a Masters Degree in Education from Pennsylvania State University in 1961.
She taught in the Cumberland County Schools for 24 years.  In 1961 she joined the Pennsylvania State Department of Education where she spent 17 years serving as liaison with the State Education Association and as Assistant Commissioner for Basic Education.
She was President of the Pennsylvania State Education Association in 1960 and served on the National Education Association’s Commission for Professional Rights and Responsibilities, 1960-1965.
Bertha has been an active member in the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years.
Surviving are her daughter: Donna Boyd Jenkinson of Levittown, two grandchildren: James Jenkinson (and wife Lizbeth) of Levittown and Julie Ann Gravuer (and husband, Christopher) of Langhorne; four great grandchildren, Emily and Jamie Jenkinson, of Levittown and Kiersten and Chase Gravuer of Langhorne. 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 64 East North Street, Carlisle with Rev. John L. Shellenberger, Jr. officiating.  Burial will be in the Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle.  A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of the service on Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the First United Methodist Church, 64 East North Street, Carlisle, PA 17013 or Chapel Pointe Benevolent Fund, 770 South Hanover Street, Carlisle, PA 17013.
