Barbara J. Gilbert

Barbara J. Gilbert, 84, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at UPMC West Shore.

She was born August 21, 1938, in Easton, PA to the late Lewis and Marguerite (Smith) Crull.

Barbara graduated in 1956 as the valedictorian of the former Green Park High School in Perry County. She was employed by the former USF&G Insurance Company as a secretary after graduation. Barbara loved her family and felt fortunate she was able to stay home with her children during their younger years. When her children were in school, she worked at Green Ridge Elementary School both as a cafeteria and a library aide until her retirement. Barbara also served as the secretary / bookkeeper of her husband’s plumbing business since its inception. Barbara and her husband were longtime active members of Youngs Church in Mechanicsburg.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, J. Leon Gilbert Sr. of Mechanicsburg; three children, John Leon (wife Robin) Gilbert Jr. of Mechanicsburg, Kay (husband Mark) Peters of Mechanicsburg, and Beth (husband Mark) Mega of Cary, IL; six grandchildren, John Leon Gilbert III, Brian (wife Amy) Gilbert, Matthew (wife Rachel) Peters, Courtney (husband Adam) Cross, Danielle Gilbert, and Ashley (husband Sean) Drake; and four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Peyton, Sierra, and Madison. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her sister, Judith Brown.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Youngs Church, 7075 Wertzville Road Mechanicsburg, PA 17050. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church.
