Arline Ceceile Tiedeman(N) Weiss

d. January 20, 2011

Arline Ceceile Tiedeman(n) Weiss passed away on January 20, 2011 at home in Carlisle, PA with loving family and friends by her side at the age of 87. Arline was born on January 2, 1924 in the Norwegian Hospital, Brooklyn, New York, daughter of Ceceile (Johnson) and Fred Tiedeman.
Arline graduated from Brooklyn’s Bushwick High School in 1941 with an interest in the dramatic arts. “Her eyes have it!” captioned Arline’s yearbook photo. After studying business at the Berkeley School, she worked at Brentano’s flagship store in Manhattan and later as executive secretary for the vice-president of Pan American World Airways, where she met her future husband Harry H. Weiss, Jr. Early interests included teaching Sunday school, directing church plays, traveling in Europe and the Americas and participating in Luther League and the New York Young Republicans. Harry and Arline married in 1953 and made a home in North Tarrytown (now Sleepy Hollow), New York where they raised two daughters, Ceceile and Carol. Arline was active in civic and philanthropic groups, including Neighborhood House in Tarrytown, the United Way of Westchester County, and in the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter BC New York. Arline and Harry were members of The Union Church of Pocantico Hills, where she taught Sunday school and served as a volunteer. After Harry retired, he and Arline moved to Carlisle, Pennsylvania and, later, added a home in Sun City, Florida. Arline enjoyed volunteer work in the Carlisle community and her membership in the P.E.O Sisterhood, Chapter BI Pennsylvania. She also took great pleasure in the lives of her grandchildren including rooting for their sports teams and attending school performances. Arline and Harry were members of First Presbyterian Church in Carlisle. She was a devoted caregiver to Harry during his years of illness. After Harry’s death, Arline attended Second Presbyterian Church with her daughter Ceceile.
Arline was blessed with an adventurous spirit and a sweet nature that enabled her to meet, in recent years, the difficulties of dementia with grace and dignity. Her personal warmth and devotion to family, friends and community will always be remembered.
Arline is survived by her brother Richard F. Tiedeman(n) of Mt. Vernon, New York, daughters Ceceile Strand of Carlisle and Carol Staudter of Ossining, New York, grandchildren Eleanor and Erik Strand and Margaret and George Staudter, and sons-in-law David Strand and Thomas Staudter.
A viewing for family and friends will be held at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home and Crematory, 219 North Hanover St., Carlisle from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, January 27. A service will take place at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 28 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle, PA with the Rev. Jennifer McKenna officiating and Rev. Jeffrey W. Paul DeHoff officiating with burial to follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. A viewing will be held in the library of Union Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
